事業概要

 About Wakayama Farm, Inc

Wakayama Farm is a three-generation farmer, with 24 hectares land, dedicated to harvesting bamboo shoots and chestnuts by the circular-agricultural method.

The history of Wakayama Farm dates back to about 350 years ago when the Wakayama family’s ancestors first settled in this land and cultivated the vast wild forest. For centuries the Wakayama Family has cultivated many different crops. The first turning point was about 100 years ago when Zenzo Wakayama who studied modern agriculture at the university decided to focus the business on bamboo shoots and chestnuts by the circular-agricultural approach and then Wakayama Farm was founded.

The Second-generation Yukio Wakayama advanced the business further. Amid the fast expansion of plastics and imported petroleum products during the mid-20th century, Yukio developed new processing technologies for bamboo materials and new bamboo varieties.

The Third-generation Taro Wakayama, current CEO of Wakayama Farm, Inc., shifted the focus away from the bamboo as strictly utility plant to introducing it into comprehensive landscape design and recognized how bamboo enhances the urban cityscapes. Today, Wakayama Farm is the largest and one-of-a-kind bamboo nursery in Japan.

Wakayama Farm, Inc. focuses on harvesting bamboo shoots and chestnuts, producing wide range of varieties of bamboos for landscaping, and use the bamboo forest for ecotourism.

Bamboo Forest Management

With the goal of fully utilizing all the resources provided by the bamboo forest, we carry out thorough management—such as thinning—across 21 hectares (approximately 100,000 bamboo stalks) every year. Our aim is to create a truly sustainable green landscape while making effective use of around 20,000 cut bamboo culms annually, reinforcing our commitment to carbon neutrality.

In addition, we are actively working to make use of the bamboo forest as a well-maintained and visually striking location for various purposes.

A. Bamboo Shoot Production & Sales

Through rigorous cultivation management using a natural, circular farming method that returns bamboo chips to the soil, we produce high-quality agricultural products. These are sold directly through on-site sales as well as distributed to the Tokyo market and restaurants.

B. Bamboo Seedling Production & Sales

We are engaged in selective breeding through seed propagation to develop new varieties, with a focus on our original dwarf variety Himeakebono Mōsōchiku. We produce and sell bamboo seedlings as ornamental plants, and our bamboo has been widely adopted in redevelopment projects—particularly in urban centers such as airports, hotels, and commercial facilities.

We produce and sell raw bamboo harvested through forest management, repurposing cut bamboo for various uses such as oyster farming rafts, New Year’s decorative kadomatsu, split bamboo, and small-diameter bamboo for landscaping. We also manufacture and sell bamboo chips.
